30, Monday. Laying Groundwork for 2010 NPT Review Conference. The first of three Preparatory Committee (PrepCom) sessions opens in Vienna 30 April 2007 in the run-up to the 2010 Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT). 5, Monday. IAEA Board Meets in Vienna. The IAEA Board of Governors is meeting this week at the Agency's Vienna Headquarters. Director General Mohamed ElBaradei today briefed the Board on issues of nuclear verification, safety and security and the peaceful use of nuclear technologies. He also spoke to the Press. 3, Wednesday: US Security Leaders Call for Action Toward "World Free of Nuclear Weapons". Four former senior officials in the United States government call for urgent and concerted efforts against the world's nuclear dangers, in an essay published in the Wall Street Journal 3 January 2006. The authors are former Secretary of State George P. 23, Thursday: IAEA Director General Briefs Board on Nuclear Safeguards, Other Topics. IAEA Director General Mohamed ElBaradei addressed the Agency´s 35-member Board of Governors on a range of topics, including the IAEA´s Technical Cooperation Programme and developments related to nuclear safeguards. 30, Monday: IAEA Director General Addresses UN General Assembly on Nuclear Verification, Other Topics. The number of States with safeguards agreements and additional protocols under the NPT has steadily increased, but more than 100 States have yet to bring additional protocols into force, Dr. ElBaradei said in an address to the UN General Assembly. 25, Thursday: IAEA Chief & US Secretary of State Talk Non-Proliferation. Non-proliferation was the focus of talks between IAEA Head Dr. Mohamed ElBaradei and US Secretary of State Dr. Condoleezza Rice in Washington yesterday. 18, Friday: G8 Leaders Endorse IAEA´s Work for Nuclear Safety, Security, Safeguards. Leaders of the Group of 8 leading industrialized countries (G8) reaffirmed their full support of the IAEA at their annual summit held 6-8 July in Gleneagles, Scotland. In a six page statement, the G8 endorsed IAEA efforts in the fields of nuclear non-proliferation and measures to improve the security of radioactive sources world wide. Full Story

14, Tuesday: Dr. ElBaradei Urges States to Reform "Faltering" Security System. Speaking to the IAEA Board of Governors, Director General ElBaradei expressed disappointment at the outcome of the NPT Review Conference, and underscored serious challenges ahead. He urged all States to pursue in earnest solutions to reforming our faltering global security system - of which the non-proliferation regime is an essential part. The United Nations summit in September is a timely opportunity to launch this urgently needed reform, he said. DG Board Statement

17, Thursday: Director General ElBaradei Assesses Nuclear Proliferation Threats. In an interview with CNN, IAEA Director General Mohamed ElBaradei assessed the threats of nuclear proliferation facing the IAEA and international community. He called for a reevaluation and reinforcement of the world´s Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), which States are reviewing in May 2005. The 2005 Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) will meet 2-27 May 2005 at the United Nations in New York, to hammer out priorities to confront the spread of nuclear weapons. 31, Monday: IAEA Chief Briefs Press on Nuclear Verification, Security Issues. In recent media interviews, IAEA Director General Mohamed ElBaradei underlined the urgency of stepping up efforts against nuclear proliferation and potential acts of terrorism. Speaking to reporters at the World Economic Forum (WEF), Dr. ElBaradei also addressed questions on the major issues before the IAEA, including nuclear verification in Iran and North Korea. 11, Tuesday: IAEA´s Work Singled Out by UN Panel on Global Security. A high level panel has cited the IAEA as "an extraordinary bargain" for its work to prevent widespread proliferation of nuclear weapons, in a new report on security threats facing humanity, and how policies and institutions must change to beat them. The report A More Secure World: Our Shared Responsibility includes 101 recommendations on UN reform and for forging a global response to threats of terrorism, poverty, disease, weapons of mass destruction and civil violence.
