25, Thursday: IAEA Chief ElBaradei Briefs Board on Iran Safeguards, Other Issues. IAEA Director General Mohamed ElBaradei briefed the Agency´s 35-member Board of Governors on a range of issues, including IAEA verification of nuclear programmes in Iran and South Korea. Earlier this week, in a separate statement to the Board´s Technical Cooperation Committee, he outlined the Agency´s planned programme supporting global development. 2, Tuesday: UN General Assembly Backs IAEA´s "Indispensable Role". The United Nations General Assembly affirmed its confidence in the IAEA and urged global cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy, following the annual address by IAEA Director General Mohamed ElBaradei. States adopted a resolution that strongly supported the Agency´s "indispensable role" in the area of technology transfer to developing countries and in nuclear safety, verification and security. 13, Monday: IAEA Board of Governors Meet on Nuclear, Other Issues. The IAEA Board of Governors opens its meetings 13 September in Vienna, a week before the opening of the Agency´s General Conference of Member States. The Board agenda includes topics of nuclear security, waste management, and nuclear verification in Iran and Libya. Director General Statement
4, Wednesday: Dr. ElBaradei Reviews Challenges, Opportunities to Free Middle East of WMD. In an interview 27 July 2004 with Egypt´s Al-Ahram newspaper, IAEA Director General Mohamed ElBaradei focused on efforts in the Middle East toward securing a region free of weapons of mass destruction, saying he sees opportunities for countries to seize. 25, Friday: IAEA Work Commended at Non-Proliferation Conference. The IAEA´s work and leadership to help the world curb the spread of nuclear weapons were commended at the 2004 Non-Proliferation Conference of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. IAEA Director General Mohamed ElBaradei was among a distinguished group of keynote speakers addressing nuclear and security issues. Full Story | Director General Speech
15, Tuesday: The Netherworld of Non-Proliferation. During recent visits in May 2004, IAEA Director General spoke at the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) in New York on the IAEA´s work and issues of nuclear non-proliferation. In France, he addressed the Foreign Affairs Commission and the Defense Commission of the National Assembly. 28, Wednesday: UN Security Council Adopts Resolution 1540 on Non-Proliferation. The UN Security Council adopted a non-proliferation resolution by which it decided that all States shall refrain from supporting by any means non-State actors that attempt to acquire, use or transfer nuclear, chemical or biological weapons and their delivery systems. Resolution 1540 was adopted under Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter, and calls for all States to establish domestic controls to prevent the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and means of delivery, in particular for terrorist purposes, including by establishing appropriate controls over related materials, and adopt legislative measures in that respect.
