Cracking Export Markets
Mali's farmers now want to start exporting live cattle to the Middle East. In Senegal, the Minister for Scientific Research, Christian Diatta, hopes that his country can eventually export to Europe and tap the "bio-friendly" market. Official recognition that their countries are "rinderpest free" pushes open the door to these potential export markets a little wider. A heifer's export value is up to ten times the amount that it sells for at home.
