Activities within INPRO are carried out in close cooperation of INPRO Members and the INPRO Group at the IAEA.
Phase 1 of the project ran from 2001 to 2006, focusing on the development of the INPRO methodology, which has become an internationally validated tool for nuclear energy system assessments (NESA).
Phase 2 of INPRO began in 2006. In 2009, INPRO activities were consolidated into five main areas which also direct the action plan for 2010-2011. They are:
A: Nuclear Energy System Assessments (NESA)
Activities in this area assist Member States in performing Nuclear Energy System Assessments (NESA) using the INPRO methodology in support of long-term strategic planning and decision-making on nuclear energy development and deployment.
B: Global Vision on Sustainable Nuclear Energy
By formulating potential global and regional scenarios, on the basis of a scientific-technical pathway analysis, and harmonizing visions for long-term nuclear energy development and deployment, INPRO helps newcomers and "mature" nuclear countries alike to working towards building a sustainable nuclear architecture in the 21st century.
C: Innovations in Nuclear Technology
Activities in this area focus on fostering collaboration among INPRO members on selected innovative nuclear technologies and related R&D that contribute to sustainable nuclear energy.
D: Innovations in Institutional Arrangements
In addition to the complete nuclear fuel cycle, institutional arrangements (such as treaties, agreements, national and international frameworks or regimes and conventions) are also part of the nuclear energy system. Work in this area supports collaboration among Member States in developing and implementing innovative institutional and legal arrangements for nuclear energy systems in the 21st century.
E: INPRO Dialogue Forum (cross-cutting)
The Dialogue Forum fosters the information exchange between technology holders and technology users to ensure that future technical and institutional innovations meet the expectations of both. The Forum also addresses national long-term nuclear energy planning strategies and approaches and, on the highest level, the global nuclear energy system.
