Tomihiro Taniguchi, IAEA Deputy Director General and Head of Department of Nuclear Safety and Security

Mr. Tomihiro Taniguchi joined the IAEA as Deputy Director General, Head of Department of Nuclear Safety and Security in August 2001. He is in charge of nuclear safety and security, including the development and revision of international safety standards and security guidelines, and international review and advisory services for their application. Prior to coming to the Agency, Mr. Taniguchi was Executive Director of Nuclear Power Engineering Corporation, Japan.
Mr. Taniguchi spent 30 years working for the Japanese Ministry of International Trade and Industry. As the Deputy Director General in charge of nuclear policy, he was the Japanese Government´s chief administrative officer on all aspects of commercial use of nuclear energy, including safety and regulation, contributed to the establishment of the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency (NISA).
Mr. Taniguchi gave regular lectures as a visiting Professor at the University of Tokyo, where he taught Nuclear Sociotechnics and Advanced Technology Industrial Policy. Prior to the IAEA, Mr. Taniguchi served as the Vice Chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Mr. Taniguchi was also part of the IAEA group and the IPCC group, which were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2005 and 2007, respectively.
