23 April 2010 | On 21 April, 2010, IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano addressed the Japan Atomic Industrial Forum´s 43rd Annual Conference held in Matsue City, Japan. He noted that Member States´ interest in introducing nuclear power is growing.
The Agency has for some years provided these countries with advice on how to put the appropriate legal and regulatory framework in place and how to ensure the highest standards of safety, security and safeguards, as well as with know-how on the construction, commissioning, start-up and operation of nuclear reactors.
"The end-result," he said, "is that countries will be able to introduce nuclear power knowledgeably, profitably, safely and securely." He stated that Member States´ contributions to these programs are vitally important, since "there is a limit to what the Agency alone can do to assist newcomers."
The Annual Conference provides a forum for international nuclear officials to review and discuss trends in nuclear energy policy.
