Kazakh Foreign Minister Meets IAEA Director General

15 January 2010 | On 15 January 2010, IAEA Director General, Yukiya Amano, met the Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Mr. Kanat Saudabayev, at the Agency headquarters in Vienna. During their meeting, they discussed the continuing cooperation between the Agency and Kazakhstan. Through the Agency´s technical cooperation program, Kazakhstan receives support in nuclear education, nuclear medicine, agriculture, and research reactor safety.

Mr. Saudabayev informed the Director General about Kazakhstan´s willingness to host the IAEA´s low enriched uranium fuel bank once such a bank is established. Kazakhstan joined the Agency in 1994 and concluded its comprehensive safeguards agreement as party to the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty in 1995, followed by the ratification of the Additional Protocol in 2007. The Minister also reiterated his country´s commitment to nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation. Kazakhstan has ratified on 9 May 2007 the agreement on a nuclear-weapon free zone in Central Asia (CANWFZ), which entered into force on 21 March 2009.

The Minister also extended to the Director General an invitation to visit Kazakhstan at a convenient date.
