IAEA Chief Visits Belarus
On 2 April 2012, IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano paid an official visit to Belarus, during which he addressed the Institute of Retraining and Professional Development in the Belarusian Ministry of Emergency Situations. The Director General said Belarusian experts had acquired considerable knowledge and expertise in response to the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster which they had shared with the IAEA and its Member States. Their experience proved extremely valuable when the IAEA had to respond to the Fukushima Daiichi accident, which occurred in his home country a year ago. He also welcomed the Institute’s work in helping to prevent illicit trafficking in nuclear and other radioactive materials in Belarus.
