Lothar Wedekind is an award-winning journalist who heads the IAEA News and Information Section of the Division of Public Information. He has served the Agency since 1984, as chief editor of the IAEA Bulletin flagship magazine and in various editorial and communication capacities.
Lothar started his career in Washington, DC, where he was a newspaper reporter, magazine writer, speechwriter, and press and public affairs officer in the governmental and private sectors. He has received reporting awards from the Virginia Press Association, among other national and international bodies. In 1989 he was honoured with the IAEA´s Distinguished Service Award and in 1999 with a merit promotion for his contributions to the Agency. He has served as chair of the United Nations editors group on several occasions.
The Division´s News and Information Section editorially manages the IAEA.org public website, the flagship IAEA Bulletin, and Agency public information products for print and electronic distribution. IAEA.org, and its predecessor site WorldAtom, is an award-winning site created and launched in May 1995. In 2006, it was singled out as one of the top three sites among United Nations and international organizations in website design and management through an award sponsored by the World Bank.
Lothar is a liberal arts graduate of Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and a master´s graduate in communications from the American University in Washington, DC. His hobbies include coaching varsity basketball since 1998 at the Vienna International School in Austria, whose team has risen to the perennial championship ranks. He is married to Miryam Vence de Wedekind and together they have three children, Nikolai, Aron, and Sophia.
