Former Senator Sam Nunn, Co-Chairman of the Nuclear Threat Iniative (NTI), IAEA Director General Mohamed ElBaradei, and Secretary Samuel Bodman, United States Department of Energy, will participate in a news conference, Monday, 29 September, at 14.00, to launch the World Institute for Nuclear Security (WINS). The 52nd annual IAEA General Conference opens today in Vienna, Austria with high level delegates and representatives from the Agency's 145 Member States in attendance. The 5-day conference - from 29 September to 4 October - will discuss major issues facing the Agency, and approve its programme and budget for the coming year. Podcast also available »

New Member States of the IAEA
The General Conference today approved the applications for IAEA membership of the Kingdom of Lesotho, Independent State of Papua New Guinea; and Sultanate of Oman. Membership takes effect once the required legal instruments are deposited with the Agency.

Better Radiation Protection for Patients
Patients in many countries need better protection from unwanted exposure to radiation during medical exams and treatment, nuclear regulators and health practitioners are warning. In some countries, doses are not well controlled, while in others problems are linked to weak regulatory oversight or medical workers who lack training. IAEA and IRD Sign "Entente Cordiale" for Development
An agreement was signed today between the IAEA and France's "Institut de Researche pour le Développment (IRD)" for co-operation in the use of nuclear techniques to address the needs of developing nations. The agreement is seen as a building block to foster coordination and develop synergies between the two institutions in areas such as pest control, soil erosion and management, as well as agricultural water management. Experts Discuss Implications of a Resurging Uranium Industry
Industry experts and delegates from Member States met to discuss safety and regulatory implications of a resurgent uranium mining industry at a roundtable session chaired by Australian Ambassador Peter Shannon. The session featured a series of presentation highlighting different perspectives of the issue: from the IAEA, from an industry representative, from a regulatory organisation, and from government. They reinforced the need for a coordinated collective response in areas of safety, regulatory framework, radiation protection, shortage of trained personnel, and implementation of best practices.
Republic of Korea Champions PACT and Fight Against Cancer

United Kingdom Donates € 1.5 Million to Nuclear Security Fund
The UK made a € 1.5 million donation to the IAEA's Nuclear Security Fund to upgrade the physical protection of a key nuclear facility in Armenia. The donation represents a step change in the type of collaboration supported through the fund, in that it is directly deploying a substantial integrated nuclear physical protection upgrade at a key location.

New Members Elected to the IAEA Board of Governors
Eleven countries have been newly elected to serve on the 35-member IAEA Board of Governors for the period 2008-2010. The action was taken by Member States meeting at the IAEA General Conference in Vienna this week. The newly elected Board members are Afghanistan, Argentina, Burkina Faso, Cuba, Egypt, Malaysia, New Zealand, Romania, Spain, Turkey and Uruguay.
For the 2008-09 period, the new composition of the 35-member IAEA Board is: Afghanistan, Albania, Algeria, Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Burkina Faso, Canada, China, Cuba, Ecuador, Egypt, Finland, France, Germany, Ghana, India, Iraq, Ireland, Japan, Lithuania, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Philippines, Romania, Russian Federation, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey, United Kingdom, United States, Uruguay. Scientific Forum Report Presented to the General Conference
The Scientific Forum's concluding report was delivered today to the 52nd Regular Session of the IAEA General Conference. Chaired by Mr. Ruud Lubbers, the 11th Scientific Forum looked at the nature and scope of the IAEA's programme to 2020 and beyond. A total of 21 presentations were given during the two-day event, which comprised four major sessions: nuclear power; food, agriculture and health; global safety and security regime; and safeguards and nuclear verification. EU Contributes to IAEA's Security Initiatives
A European Community contribution of Euro 7.5 million to support the IAEA's efforts against the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and the illegal trafficking of nuclear material was agreed today in Vienna. Tomihiro Taniguchi, Head of the IAEA Nuclear Safety and Security Department and Deputy Director General, signed the agreement in the background of the IAEA General Conference. More »

IAEA 52nd General Conference of Member States Draws to a Close
The IAEA's 52nd General Conference of Member States concluded today in Vienna. More than 130 IAEA Member States and over 1400 delegates attended the five-day event held at the Austria Center, Vienna from 29 September – 4 October. GC Displays Highlight Progress in Nuclear Technology
Countries from around the world this week showcased strides they are making in applying "atoms for peace" to their national and regional development. States Call for Strengthening Nuclear Science, Technology and Application
States meeting at the IAEA General Conference have adopted a cluster resolution that calls for measures to further strengthen IAEA activities related to nuclear science, technology and applications.
