Conference Highlights, Tuesday, 21 September
- Nuclear Fuel Cycle Issues and Challenges
Leading experts opened two days of sessions today on nuclear fuel cycles anc challenges. Featured presentations focus on advanced fuel cycles and reactor concepts and waste and spent fuel management issues. In addressing the forum, IAEA Director General Mohamed ElBaradei said that "for nuclear power to be sustainable as a global source of emission-free energy, the reactor fuel cycle must also remain sustainable". In his statement to the IAEA General Conference today, Rob Wright, UK Governor to the IAEA, announced his government's further backing for international efforts to combat the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons with a donation of 1.1 million British pounds. - Korean Exhibit Highlights Nuclear Security & Emergency Preparedness
An exhibit from the Republic of Korea highlights its technical cooperation with the IAEA, with emphasis on Korea's newly developed system for real time tracking of radiation sources and on its upgraded environmental radiation monitoring system. Full story »

- Senior Regulators' Meeting
Senior nuclear regulators from IAEA Member States began discussions today on topical safety issues. Topics covered include new scientific developments of interest for regulators and lessons learned from radiological emergencies. Opening the meeting, which concludes later today, was Mr. T. Taniguchi, IAEA Deputy Director General for Nuclear Safety and Security. More »
- Technical Cooperation Meetings
Representatives of regional cooperative agreements in Africa, Asia, and Latin America held separate meetings at the IAEA today. Member State representatives from the regions of Europe and West Asia will also hold individual group meetings.
