Staffing the IAEA: General Conference Passes Resolution

Better Gender, Geographical Balance Sought

IAEA Member States have expressed concerned that the representation of developing countries in the Agency’s Secretariat - particularly at the senior and policy-making levels - is inadequate.

On Friday 19 September 2003, the General Conference adopted a resolution requesting the Director General to address the issue of under-representation and non-representation of developing countries and certain other member States. This includes, subject to the availability of resources, organizing recruitment and/or information events in these counties.

The resolution also covered the representation of women in the IAEA Secretariat. Member States welcomed the fact that for the first time in the history of the Agency, a female Deputy Director General has been appointed. The resolution asserted the principle of equal gender representation throughout the Secretariat as an ultimate goal.
