Vienna, 15 September 2003 -- Harmonic voices of singing physicists -- the Men's Choir of the Moscow Engineering and Physics Institute -- opened the IAEA General Conference, performing songs from Russia's rich musical tradition. The choir, presently on tour in Austria and Germany, has proved its high artistic standards at many international competitions.
Russia has a long-standing choral tradition, stemming from ancient orthodox hymns. Particularly celebrated and impressive are the male choirs whose distinctive sound combines deep bass voices with clear tenors.
One of these choirs, the Men's choir of the Moscow Engineering and Physics Institute(MEPHI,Technical University) is touring in Austria in September 2003, with concerts in Vienna and Salzburg.
MEPHI, founded in 1956, is a very special organisation. Its members are not professional artists. With the exception of soloists it is made up exclusively of students and graduates of the college - only physicicists sing in the choir. The choir has proved its high artistic standards at many international competitions in France, Italy and Malta. They have also performed with choirs from Germany, France, the USA and many other countries. In Moscow their concerts are held in the most beautiful and highly esteemed venues- the Moscow Conservatory, the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall, Church of Christ the Saviour etc. and always to high acclaim.
MEPHI is a state technical university. From the very beginning of the peaceful use of nuclear power it provides the whole nuclear branch of Russian industry and nuclear research centers by first-class specialists.
