General Conference Resolution Calls Upon States to Take Steps Toward NWFZ
A resolution adopted 19 September by the IAEA General Conference calls upon States to take measures toward establishing a nuclear-weapon-free-zone (NWFZ) in the Middle East.
The resolution affirmed the urgent need for all States in the Middle Easte to accept the application of full-scope IAEA safeguards to all their nuclear activities "as an important confidence-building measure". It further requested IAEA Director General ElBaradei to continue consultations with States in the region to facilitate the early application of full-scope safeguards, and called upon all other States, especially those with special responsibility for maintaining global peace and security, to render all assistance to him.
The resolution took note of the importance of the Middle East peace talks and the activities of the multilateral working group on Arms Control and Security in promoting mutual confidence and security in the Middle East.
