"Seizing Opportunities": Scientific Forum Concludes in Vienna
plenarySeizing new opportunities and setting more targeted priorities are keys in the tough fight to gain funds and mobilize science and technology for the world’s poorest countries. At a concluding panel discussion today, experts at the IAEA Scientific Forum examined ways in which "sci-tech" tools could be better applied at national, regional, and global levels to solve the most pressing problems that countries face to meet food, water, and health needs, in the context of barriers being faced today. IAEA Director General Mohamed ElBaradei commended the Forum’s participants for providing "tremendously useful" insights to the Agency’s work for helping poor countries benefit from nuclear technologies that can accelerate progress at the local level towards the world’s goals of sustainable development. Other Meetings & Side Events at the GC
Kazakhstan’s activities in areas of nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation were reviewed at a special briefing and presentation by Mr. V. Shkolnik, the country’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources. Featured was a new book – entitled Epicenter of Peace by Mr. N. Nazarbayev – that chronicles Kazakhstan’s experience and activities over the past decade; the country was a center of nuclear testing by the former Soviet Union at Semipalatinsk and other sites that have been closed. The briefing, which included photos and a video, highlighted the country’s experience in coping with its nuclear legacy, its cooperation with the IAEA, the CTBTO, and other organizations, and its efforts in support of creating a nuclear-weapon-free zone in Central Asia. Kazakhstan recently hosted the International Conference "21st Century – Towards a Nuclear-Weapon-Free-World" in Almaty, on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the country’s independence and the closure of the Semipalatinsk site. Scientific ForumThe Scientific Forum concluded with a panel discussion moderated by Ms. Margaret Catley-Carlson, chair of the Global Water Partnership. A report on the Forum is expected to be made Friday to the General Conference.

TCTechnical Cooperation. Displays on regional cooperation activities throughout the week preceded meetings scheduled Thursday for groups and representatives engaged in IAEA technical cooperation activities. Regional cooperation includes IAEA Technical Cooperation programmes and nuclear cooperation among European countries and through agreements in Africa (AFRA), Latin America (ARCAL), and Asia and the Pacific (RCA) regions.

Throughout the week, delegates and governmental representatives have visited interactive displays on information technology for Technical Cooperation. Displays and demonstrations featured the IAEA Department of Technical Cooperation’s (TC) Web pages, which is open to the general public, and TC-PRIDE, a restricted site for project and national counterparts that has become a valuable managerial and communications tool.
