Zimbabwe, Mr. Z. Nsimbi, Deputy Minister, Ministry of Transport and Energy: | ||||
| He informed that measures to address the Y2K in his country have been taken to meet the deadline and that four technical co-operation projects are being implemented, noting in particular the project on Isotopes in "Water Resources Assessment and Development," designed to help develop an effective groundwater management plan. With regards to Technical Co-operation, the speaker mentioned that the project for "Biofertilisers Crop Production for Smallholders" has been implemented in 6 of the 8 provinces, thus improving the rural life of the population. Furthermore, the country is playing a central role in a regional undertaking in Sub-Saharan Africa. Zimbabwe is also participating in the project on "Upgrading and Development of Radiation Infrastructure" and will be assisted by the IAEA in setting up an independent national radiation authority. The speaker added that two new projects on early detection, treatment and control of cancer were approved for the 1999–2000 project cycle. Zimbabwe was pleased to host the first coordination meeting on the regional project on "Isotopes for Communicable Diseases for Malaria and Tuberculosis". Those two diseases are major killers in the country, and the implementation of this project will have a huge impact on the welfare of the Zimbabweans. Zimbabwe became a member of AFRA in April 1998. Since that time four AFRA projects in main hospitals, and the project on waste management, are currently being implemented, through which people have greatly benefited. However due to financial constraints in other sectors, those projects will only start in the year 2000. | ||||
