Zambia, Honourable D. Pule, Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Vocational Training: | ||||
| The delegate welcomed Angola and Honduras as new members to the Agency. He noted that the Republic of Zambia has continued to benefit from Technical Cooperation projects, specifically successful projects using gamma irradiation to sterilize pig tissue for burn grafts, and the use of radiation in developing millet and bean cultivars. Training provided to researchers has strengthened the use of radiation in crop development. Agency assistance is benefitting farmers through propagation of potatoes and cassava plants, as well as biofertilizer and animal supplementation projects. The delegate noted the important strides taken to improve the workplace environment in Zambian mines through a project on measuring industrially-created aerosols. He noted that significant progress had been achieved in the diagnosis of drug-resistant malaria cases through a regional project using nuclear techniques. He reiterated Zambia’s support for Technical Co-operation within the framework of African Regional Research Agreement (AFRA) on Nuclear Science and Technology and congratulated the members of the AFRA Group for all their achievements in the past 10 years, especially the establishment of specialized audit teams for radiotherapy, nuclear medicine, and detection of dam leakage. He noted that Zambia had hosted an AFRA pre-project mission on conditioning of radium sources used by the mining industry. Turning to Article VI of the IAEA Statute, the delegate stated that any expansion of the Board should take into account the geographical representation of the membership of the Agency. He reported that Zambia’s Radiation Protection Board had organized a seminar, attended by 30 stakeholders, on safety of radioactive materials and security of nuclear materials and other radioactive sources in Lusaka in August 1999. He requested ongoing assistance from the Agency to help Member States acquire the technical capacity to detect illicit trafficking of nuclear and other radioactive materials. In closing, the delegate confirmed that Zambia would continue to support the work of the Agency in social development, curbing the spread of nuclear weapons, and environmental protection and pledged to contribute its full share of contribution to the Technical Co-operation Fund for the year 2000. | ||||
