Yemen, Mr. Mustafa Bahran, President, National Commission of Atomic Energy: | ||||
| The speaker expressed support for the activities of the IAEA in the areas of technical cooperation, nuclear safety, and safeguards. On combating illicit trafficking, the speaker expressed hope that international cooperation would be strengthened. He emphasized the need to mobilize efforts in disarmament, in accordance with the NPT. With regard to the Middle East peace process, the speaker noted encouraging progress but stressed the need to fully take into account the desires of the Palestinian people for statehood. He also expressed sympathy for the Iraqi people. He also expressed the view that Israel should sign the NPT — this would enhance security in the Middle East. The speaker then offered on a personal note an encouraging assessment of the recent presidential election in Yemen, in which 3.7 Yemeni registered voters selected a President for the first time on the basis of universal suffrage. Within the framework of Yemen’s nuclear institution building, he mentioned that the National Commission of Atomic Energy had recently been established. He then invited support from the Agency and other States for nuclear applications in development, agriculture, medicine, water etc. He wanted to thank the Agency for its technical support, specifically paying tribute to the IAEA Technical Cooperation Department. | ||||
