Uruguay, Mr. Jorge L. Servián, Director, National Directorate for Nuclear Technology:

The speaker commended the Agency’s efforts to improve the design, selection and execution of its technical cooperation projects, as well as the growth in technical cooperation activities and the involvement of Member States in the activities of ARCAL. He also emphasized the importance of a balance between energy-related and non-energy applications within the Agency’s assistance portfolio. He pointed out that the temptation to allow the Agency to evolve into one whose sole or primary focus was verification and safeguards would drastically reduce its universality and effectiveness. The speaker concluded by informing the meeting that Uruguay was considering the possibility of restructuring, with Agency assistance, the structure of its activities in the area of radiological protection.
