| The delegate expressed to Member States his Government’s deep appreciation of the moral and material aid given to his country in the aftermath of the recent earthquake. He congratulated the IAEA on a successful, active year under the leadership of the DG. The Agency’s efforts towards implementing resolutions and decisions on radiation safety were welcomed, and its work towards development of safe techniques for radioactive waste disposal saluted. The delegate noted the success of the demonstration programmes in the radioactive waste management disposal facility at Cekmece, and encouraged establishment of similar facilities in other countries. He thanked the Agency for its prompt intervention and assistance during a recent accident caused by an orphan radioactive source in January 1999 in his country , and called for active endorsement by the GC of the Action Plan to remedy hazards caused by orphan sources. Turkey recognises the significance of safe transport of radioactive and nuclear materials, and expressed its support of the IAEA Transport Safety Appraisal Service, calling for Member States to support it as well. The delegate emphasised the importance of discussions on NPP site status at the 1st Review Meeting of the Convention on Nuclear Safety, as well as of the information received on safety of nuclear installations in countries neighbouring Turkey. He emphasised the value of the IAEA’s TC programmes and projects, going on to note the role of nuclear in the global increase in energy demand. Here he welcomed Agency efforts towards development of small- and medium-sized reactors as indicators of the Clean Development Mechanism, as well as noted its role in the model project known as the "Black Sea Project" as a useful model for regional marine environmental projects. The delegate called for a legally binding international instrument on illicit trafficking and enumerated the measures against it which his country had taken. He closed by reaffirming Turkey’s support of the IAEA Safeguards System, and noted the importance of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty, which Turkey had signed the day it was opened for signature. | ||||
