Tunisia, Mr. Mohamed Ben Ahmed, Secretary of State for Scientific Research and Technology: | ||||
| He welcomed Angola and Honduras as new members of the IAEA. His country closely follows technological achievement relative to the design and construction of small and medium (SMEs) reactors, as well as IAEA efforts on these aspects. Research opportunities which enable small countries to generate power and water desalination are of special importance. Tunisia has joined the group of experts composed by the Agency relating to sea water desalination. The participation of IAEA experts at a regional workshop concerning the economic evaluation system of sea water desalination using nuclear energy was appreciated, he said. He further expressed appreciation for the co-operation between Tunisia and the Agency in the training of many national experts to acquire skills required for scientific instruments. In the beginning of this year, Tunisia established a semi industrial facility with a capacity for irradiation of food stuffs with support from the IAEA and France. He commended the support and expressed appreciation for their participation in financing this project and training Tunisian experts. Tunisia supports enhanced co-operation regarding nuclear safety, and is concerned about sea transports of nuclear and radioactive materials. In closing, he emphasized the importance of an effective safeguards system and the fissile material cut-off treaty, and he urged all States to place their nuclear facilities under full-scope IAEA safeguards. | ||||
