| Focusing his attention on the Middle East and the efforts to achieve peace and security in the region, he reviewed his country’s position and underscored the imperative of finding peaceful solutions to difficult and longstanding issues. He appealed to States to urge Israel to accept full-scope safeguards on its nuclear facilities, and implored the IAEA to do its utmost in keeping with its Statutory mandate. He commended the IAEA Director General for his "tremendous" efforts over the past year in consulting with States in the region on the applications of safeguards and the goal of establishing a nuclear-weapon-free zone in the Middle East. He further addressed the issue of IAEA Board representation, urging a solution to its expansion, and expressed appreciation to the Agency for its technical cooperation activities and the high rate of delivery of programmes. He welcomed the new strategy to strengthen technical cooperation and said his country is benefitting from a model project to upgrade infrastructures and national capabilities for radiation safety. In closing, he underscored the importance of improved funding for technical cooperation, and noted with pleasure the increased cooperation between the IAEA and Arab Atomic Energy Agency. | ||||
