Sweden, Mr. Lars Hoegberg, Director General, Swedish Nuclear Power Inspectorate: | ||||
| He reaffirmed Sweden’s partnership to follow up the call for a new agenda for nuclear disarmament, and looked to the 2000 Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons to provide needed new impetus to the process of nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament. In recalling the nuclear tests last year in South Asia, he urged all States to become parties to the NPT and the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty. The Agency’s safeguards system is an important tool to strengthen the non-proliferation regime, which Sweden actively supports, he noted. He further cited the importance of international safety conventions, which he called cornerstones of a global regime, and described the recent review conference of parties to the Nuclear Safety Convention as constructive. He said the IAEA has a key role as a driving force in nuclear and radioactive waste safety, adding that Sweden welcomes the ongoing development of IAEA activities in these areas. He closed by expressing his country’s support for steps to better align IAEA technical cooperation activities with national priorities and plans of recipient countries. | ||||
