| He focused his remarks on the situation in the Middle East, and the desire to establish a nuclear-weapon-free zone where all States accept comprehensive safeguards on their nuclear activities. Saudia Arabia attaches particular importance to the safeguards regime in the interests of regional and global security, he said. He appreciated the Agency’s efforts to halt the trafficking in nuclear and radioactive material. Turning to peaceful uses of nuclear energy, he said that the Saudi Arabian delegation has always attached great importance to the Agency’s role in areas of technical cooperation and development, and strongly supports activities related to nuclear desalination and other projects carrying positive impacts for social, economic and environmental sustainable development of countries. On the issue of the IAEA Board composition, he said that efforts to expand the Board should be based on the international realities of our day, and that the number of members should be proportional to the size and role of the regional groups. | ||||
