Portugal, Ambassador João Rosa Lã, Permanent Representative: | ||||
| The delegate expressed his country’s full support of the statement read on behalf of the European Union. He noted his confidence in the Agency and its activities, particularly with regard to programme and management reforms, and went on to commend the Agency for its efforts to cope with budgetary restrictions while maintaining its standards. The delegate underscored the importance of International Conventions in the field of nuclear safety, referring specifically to the recent Review Meeting. The role of the Agency in applying advanced technologies to nuclear safety and radioactive waste management was noted. The delegate also referred to research reactors, illicit trafficking in nuclear and radioactive materials, transport and radiation protection as inherent domains of the Agency. He called on all Member States to accede to the safety regime, and applauded the signing of the Additional Protocol by Member States. With regard to verification activities and the diversion of fissile materials for military purposes, the delegate noted that important and steady, albeit slow, progress was being made towards prohibiting nuclear weapons. His reference to the DPRK called on that country to co-operate with IAEA inspections as demanded by the UN Security Council. In closing, the delegate referred to the benefits his country had had from IAEA Technical Co-operation projects. In his opinion, IAEA TC projects were too little known to the general public, but the presentation of the TC Annual Report with its general accessibility was commended. Portugal is ready to participate in TC desalination projects, particularly in Portuguese-speaking countries, should the Agency call on it to do so. The delegate closed by commending the Agency for its unique function, its experience and objectivity. | ||||
