He commended the Agency’s efforts to review and revise its safety standards. His country is improving its legal, administrative and technical infrastructure for safety and is participating in a regional project on legislative requirements. It is further building up its capabilities in areas of emergency response and preparedness. On the Y2K issue, he expressed appreciation for Agency assistance and said that readiness measures have been taken at various facilities. In reviewing his country’s nuclear activities, he said a number of projects are being implemented with IAEA support, including those of regional importance. The projects cover marine coastal pollution, nuclear techniques in oil exploration, and hydrology. His country will be hosting both a regional training course and a seminar in the near future, and he pointed with pride to its role as an emerging center of distinction in areas of geothermal hydrology, nutrition and agriculture. On safeguards topics, he urged States to accept the Additional Protocol and support the further integration of the strengthened safeguards system. Addressing the composition of the IAEA Board, he reaffirmed his country’s view that it needs wider representation from developing countries and commended the Chairman and Board for its work toward reaching a conclusion of this long-standing issue.
