He opened by enumerating his country's activities in the field of technical co-operation. Among the Agency projects in which Peru has participated, he noted two projects: the first with Chile for medfly eradication and the latter with Bolivia to preserve the hydrological resources of Lake Titicaca. As for the regular programme, he said that Peru has carried out projects to strengthen the country's physical infrastructure in the field of research reactors, automation of laboratories, irradiation of food and medical products, and improvement of nuclear safety. He also mentioned the continuation of advanced research programmes like the improvement of native grains and those related to health and animal reproduction. To show the volume of co-operation obtained by Peru, he said that over the past year, his country has participated in 39 expert missions, and that 88 teachers and technicians have participated in training courses, workshops, scientific visits and meetings which are directly related to projects that are presently carried out. He closed by saying that the IAEA Director General will visit Peru in October, thus strengthening the relations between his country and the Agency.
