Myanmar, Dr. Tin Hlaing, Leader of Delegation of Myanmar: | ||||
| The delegate expressed his thanks to the IAEA for making the peaceful and safe uses of nuclear energy internationally accessible, and went on to note his appreciation of IAEA accomplishments, referring specifically to contributions to the nuclear safety, sustainable development and prosperity of Member States. He underscored the significance of IAEA Technical Co-operation projects, noting that this assistance has made nuclear medicines, radiotherapy and other nuclear medical applications available in his country. He also referred to Myanmar’s increased industrial use of radioistopes in industry as a reflection of its industrial progress. The delegate noted the benefits of membership in RCAs, and thanked the IAEA for its cooperative efforts in this field. Myanmar is working towards establishing an adequate radiation protection infrastructure; here, too, IAEA assistance is proving invaluable. At the threshold of the new millennium, nuclear power and more intensive applications of nuclear techniques are called for; the IAEA’s aid and experience in planning and execution of future projects will be a major contribution to this end. The delegate also called for the Agency to intensify its Technical Assistance programmes for less developed member states. Myanmar reiterated its conviction that the establishment of nuclear weapon free zones constitutes an effective measure of preventing geographic proliferation of nuclear weapons, and called for the international community to strive towards the goal of total elimination of nuclear weapons. In closing, the delegate thanked the DG and the Agency for their contribution to peace, health and prosperity of people throughout the world. | ||||
