Mexico, Ambassador Olga Pellicer Silva: | ||||
| Referring to the three pillars of the IAEA’s work, she emphasized the importance of integrating and coordinating activities, particularly those related to nuclear applications and technical cooperation. She reviewed the importance of comparative energy studies for Mexico, and appreciated the decision-making tools that have become available through the IAEA programme. She urged the extension of such studies in view of national and global environmental goals and objectives, and the interest of States in assessing alternative energy sources and the role of nuclear energy. Turning to safety issues, she described nuclear, radiation and waste safety as fundamental to public support of nuclear energy and underlined the importance of the IAEA’s safety standards programme. On matters of safeguards and verification, she welcomed the Trilateral Initiative for verification of weapons-grade materials in Russia and the USA, but expressed concern over the financial implications and legal framework, which she said should be more extensively studied. In presenting an overview of Mexico’s nuclear programme, the Ambassador pointed out the performance of the Laguna Verde nuclear plant, noting cooperation with the World Association of Nuclear Operators and the fact that the plant is subject to peer reviews. In other areas, she pointed to progress in the application of nuclear and related techniques in areas of health care, noting the radiation sterilization of tissues. She closed by encouraging the recruitment of more female scientists by the Agency and urging States to continue their "constructive dialogue" in shaping the Agency’s future. | ||||
