The speaker endorsed the statement delivered on behalf of the European Union. He also expressed support for the initiative taken by the Director-General on the draft Medium-term Strategy. He informed the meeting that, with Agency assistance, two new important legal acts had been introduced into Lithuania’s national legislation: a Law on Radiation Protection and a Law on the Management of Radioactive Waste. He then elaborated on recent developments in Lithuania’s nuclear sector; in the process he mentioned that international support would be needed for the early closure of Lithuania’s Unit 1 by 2005; Agency support could help in the holding of a conference in Vilnius on the matter. The speaker then expressed concern regarding commonly-held views of the safety of the Ignalina nuclear power plant, expressing the view that substantial technical safety measures and improvements to the plant were not sufficiently taken into account. The speaker pointed out that Lithuania had signed the Additional Protocol to Safeguards Agreements in 1998, and that ratification thereof was expected next year. The speaker called on Iraq and DPRK to cooperate fully with the Agency on the matter of NPT adherence. In concluding, the speaker expressed appreciation for the Agency’s technical cooperation activities in Lithuania.
