Kenya, H.E. Dr. Kipkorir Aly Azad Rana, Ambassador/Permanent Representative of Kenya to the United Nations Offices in Geneva and Vienna: | ||||
| The speaker commended the efforts of the Agency in developing a focused and responsive Technical Co-operation Programme. He noted that Kenya planned to initiate work on nuclear applications in medicine and, specifically, oncology; Kenya would therefore appreciate support in developing the necessary infrastructure in this area. Another area in which Agency support would be appreciated is water resources management, including measures to control groundwater and surface water pollution. The speaker expressed support for IAEA safeguards system. He also commended the Agency for its work in facilitating the negotiation of international safety agreements; improving the security of nuclear material, noting that with regard to the latter, major challenges remain. He thus expressed hope that the Agency would strengthen efforts to prevent, detect, and respond to illicit trafficking of nuclear materials. As regards staffing in the Secretariat, the speaker emphasized the need to increase the proportion of women in the professional ranks and to give special consideration to the recruitment of qualified candidates from developing countries. | ||||
