| The speaker mentioned that Kazakhstan remains committed to the cause of non-proliferation. He informed the meeting that, on 25 September, on a former nuclear site in Kazakhstan, a calibrating test was undertaken with a view to enhancing the monitoring accuracy of the authorities in recording explosions in the region. The speaker also emphasized that Kazakhstan remains committed to the IAEA safeguards system. At present, Kazakhstan is preparing to sign the Additional Protocol to the IAEA agreement on comprehensive safeguards. The speaker noted that Kazakhstan is doing all it can to prevent the illegal trade in nuclear materials. For example, it has initiated work aimed at improving the coordination among and between the relevant state authorities and law enforcement bodies in the area of the control of nuclear materials. On safety, the speaker mentioned, Kazakhstan is preparing to ratify the Convention on Nuclear Safety, which has already been signed by the Government. On the B-350 reactor, the speaker expressed appreciation for the role of the IAEA in working with the authorities in the decommissioning process. The speaker also mentioned that his country considers the issue of waste management to be a priority; the government appreciates the IAEA regional project, which will begin implementation next year, on this matter. | ||||
