Ireland, H.E. Thelma M. Doran, Ambassador to Austria:

The speaker fully endorsed the statement made earlier in the week on behalf of the European Union. She also informed the meeting that Ireland had participated earlier in the year in the first Review Meeting for the Convention on Nuclear Safety. Ireland has rejected the nuclear power option due to the risks of a major nuclear accident. The Government of Ireland has reached the firm conclusion that the case for nuclear power is unsound. The speaker elaborated on the concerns in Ireland that have led to this conclusion, with specific regard to the risks posed by the UK nuclear industry. She referred to the OSPAR Convention on the Protection of the Marine Environment of the North East Atlantic, specifically, the commitment of contracting parties to the virtual elimination of discharges of all radioactive material into the marine environment covered by the convention by year 2020. She also pointed out that Ireland has initiated the procedures for ratification of the Protocol.
