The delegate opened by saying that the Agency’s technical co-operation projects have successfully promoted Guatemala’s high priority areas like human health, electricity generation, agriculture, hydrology, environment, and radiological protection. He said that Guatemala has made available its infrastructure for national and regional training courses and has received fellows for the exchange of scientific and technological knowledge, thus contributing to the development of Latin America. He went on to give a detailed summary of all the benefits obtained by his country during ARCAL’s 15 years. He closed by saying that geothermal development in Guatemala has progressed considerably thanks to the installation of two high power geothermal plant of 5 and 24 MWe. In the framework of co-operation between institutes, his country and the US Department of Agriculture have participated successfully in the Moscamed programme for the eradication of the Medfly.
