| The delegate expressed concern for safety issues and considered the Agency the independent and impartial organization for strengthening nuclear safety worldwide. He noted that the first review meeting on the Nuclear Safety Convention this year successfully proved the need for international cooperation in implementing transparency in nuclear safety and urged the Director General to consider initiating certain safety training activities. On non-proliferation and international safeguards, he noted that the international community plays a fundamental role in highlighting needs for disarmament and strengthening the role of the IAEA. The NPT must be reaffirmed and revitalised, he said. The delegate noted that an immediate step should be taken to expedite acceptance and implementation of the IAEA’s Additional Protocol to Safeguards Agreements to reduce the number of nuclear weapons. He expressed the importance of the NTP Review Conference of the Year 2000, which in his view will pave the way for the resolution of key challenges. Greece welcomed the IAEA, USA and Russia in taking initiatives to verify nuclear materials once removed from weapon programmes. He closed by appealing to member states to fund technical assistance programmes of the Agency. | ||||
