| He opened by congratulating the President and the Chairman. He referred to the report of the Director General for the year 1998 where several initiatives have been decided to improve the activities of he Agency. He acknowledged the efforts made by the Agency in the developing countries and particularly in Africa and encouraged the Agency to launch programmes in co-operation with regional and international organizations. For example, AFRA has focused on improving infrastructures for radiation and waste safety. He suggested that multilateral and bilateral organizations should support the activities through various projects in the areas of agriculture, human and animal health, as well as managing water resources. He welcomed the increased amount in contributions to the technical co-operation programme. Since Burkina Faso joined the IAEA in September 1997, the country has participated actively in the activities of the Agency and has signed the AFRA agreement. The speaker expressed appreciation for an IAEA mission that visited Burkina Faso in June 1999 to assess the needs of his country. | ||||
