| The speaker stated that the Additional Protocol to the Safeguards Agreement between the Czech Republic and the IAEA has been signed this week. Furthermore, a new programme for registration of nuclear materials has been prepared and provides safeguards information to the IAEA. Also, an International Physical Protection Advisory Service Mission conducted in Czech Nuclear installations stressed the high level of physical protection of nuclear materials and nuclear installations in the country. As to nuclear power engineering, the speaker underlined the importance given by his country to this topic and its goals to achieve it through nuclear safety and radiation protection programmes. Reform of the legislative and regulatory framework was completed in 1998. The speaker also referred to the First Review Meeting of the Contracting Parties to the Nuclear Safety Convention and praised the work of the IAEA as Secretariat. Referring to nuclear plant operations, the speaker also pointed out that the licensee in his country has achieved very good results while maintaining a high level of safety. This is being proved by the declining number of operational events at Dukovany NPP, and he stressed the key role of the Electrical Engineering Company. Finally, the construction of the Temelin NPP has reached the phase of non-active testing of the first unit and is planned to start operation in 2000. In areas of technical assistance, the Czech Republic is very involved with IAEA Technical Co-operation programmes and he emphasized the importance of a Model Project for the manufacture of short-lived radiopharmaceuticals, including the creation of a distribution network.. The Czech Republic has contributed USD 150 000 towards a project in Ukraine for VVER-1000/320 reactor pressure vessels, as well as giving its support to IAEA in upgrading radiation protection, and offering training to staff from the former Soviet Union. In 1999, 10 seminars and training courses were hosted in the Czech Republic. The speaker recalled the visit of Mr. El-Baradei in November 1998 as a milestone in the IAEA/Czech Republic co-operation activities. | ||||
