CTBTO, Mr. Gerardo Suarez, Officer-in-Charge: | ||||
| The speaker expressed appreciation for the opportunity to provide an update on the work of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty Organisation (CTBTO) since its first and last report to the General Conference last year. He informed the meeting that thus far, the CTBT had been signed by 154 States, and that 46 States had ratified it; this latter figured included 22 of the 44 States whose ratification would be required for the Treaty to enter into force. From 6–8 October, in Vienna, a ministerial-level meeting would be held on the early entry into force of the Treaty. The speaker then elaborated on developments in three areas of CTBTO work, focusing on the International Monitoring System, the International Data Centre, and On-site Inspections. He then described recent progress in strengthening the international legal framework that underpins the CTBT. The speaker concluded with internal developments at the CTBTO, i.e., electronic communications, budgetary matters, and personnel. | ||||
