Since Croatia joined the IAEA in 1992, he said that a number of key projects have been started to contributed to the safety and security of nuclear energy. Specifically, the country has harmonized its national legislation with IAEA standards and norms, improved the infrastructure for radiation protection and waste management, and upgraded the skills of its experts in these and other fields. He welcomed progress in establishing a stronger legal framework for nuclear safety. In areas of technology transfer, he underscored the importance to Croatia of Agency training and education activities in physics and other scientific fields. He further noted that the Croatian Nuclear Society is preparing an international conference in June 2000 on the subject of small- and medium-sized reactors. He expressed high regard for IAEA support of national efforts to maintain high safety levels at the Krsko nuclear plant, which Croatia co-owns, and welcomed the planned visit of IAEA experts. He closed by noting the growing cooperation between his country and the Agency through technical assistance programmes, pointing out that Croatian institutes now serve as training centres for scientific fellows.
