Poland, Mr. Jerzy Niewodniczanski, President, National Atomic Energy Agency:
Poland, one of the original Contracting Parties to the Convention on Nuclear Safety, welcomed with satisfaction the results of its first Review Meeting held in April this year. It confirmed the importance of universal adherence to conventions and other safety related instruments. Referring to the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty, the speaker noted that his country had ratified the treaty in January 1999. Additionally, by signing to the Joint Convention on the Safety of Spent Fuel Management and on Safety of Radioactive Waste Management, Poland has demonstrated its continuous adherence to the idea of the nuclear safe world. The speaker said that one of the serious international problems is the issue of illicit trafficking of nuclear materials and radiation sources. He commended Agency efforts in combating illicit trafficking, giving the example of the International Physical Protection Advisory Services (IPPAS) which considerably improved the technical systems of physical protection in Poland. His country also supports the Technical Cooperation activities and finds the Partner in Development a key principle for the TC strategy. Following its ideas, Poland is organising an International Condensed Magnetised Plasma Physics Centre in Warsaw. The speaker closed by supporting the Agency’s efficiency in preparation of the programme and budget for the next two-year cycle.
