He emphasized his organization's desire to increase its cooperation with the IAEA, noting that discussions toward this end had been held recently. He said the LAS looks forward to the greater consolidation of the IAEA's role in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy, including activities relating to safety, safeguards and technical cooperation. He emphasized the need for a nuclear-weapon-free zone in the Middle East that requires acceptance of comprehensive IAEA safeguards and appealed to Israel to accede to the NPT. The efforts of the IAEA to assist countries in the region on verification questions were commended a nd encouraged.
