| The delegate opened by welcoming Benin as a new member of the IAEA. He said that Cyprus has created a sufficient base and an active legal system for combating the illicit trafficking of nuclear and other radioactive material. Cyprus recently ratified the Convention on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Material. The ratification of the Convention on Nuclear Safety as well as the Additional Protocol on Safeguards was recently approved. An important decision taken by Cyprus is to set up an Atomic Energy Commission. Soon the necessary legislation, the relevant authorities and the required infrastructure will be established, thus protecting the people of Cyprus from the harmful effects of ionising radiation. Cyprus has also signed the CTBT and is changing legislation in order to ratify the treaty. | ||||
