Highlights

The 41st Regular Session of the IAEA convened 29 September 1997 with delegates from 106 Member States in attendance.

Mr. Jerzy Niewodniczanski from Poland Mr. Jerzy Niewodniczanski, President of the National Atomic Energy Agency of Poland, was elected President of the 41st IAEA General Conference; and Mr. Richard Stratford from the United States as Chairperson of the Committee of the Whole.

The Conference approves the appointment of Dr. Mohamed ElBaradei as new IAEA Director General and honours Dr. Hans Blix with the title "Director General Emeritus".

The following multilateral instruments were opened for signature: Joint Convention on the Safety of Spent Fuel Management and on the Safety of Radioactive Waste Management; Protocol to Amend the Vienna Convention on Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage; and Convention on Supplementary Compensation for Nuclear Damage.

IAEA officially announces the publication of two books - a history and a collection of personal reflections - to mark the 40th anniversary of the Agency's founding.

On Thursday, 2 October, the General Conference elected 11 new members to the IAEA Board of Governors: Ghana, Hungary, Italy, Republic of Korea, Mexico, Morocco, Pakistan, Peru, Slovenia, Sweden and Viet Nam.
